Winner of a 2016 Newbery Honor, ECHO pushes the boundaries of genre, form, and storytelling innovation. Lost and alone in a forbidden forest, Otto meets three mysterious sisters and suddenly finds himself entwined in a puzzling quest involving a prophecy, a promise, and a harmonica. Decades later, Friedrich in Germany, Mike in Pennsylvania, and Ivy in California each, in turn, become interwoven when the very same harmonica lands in their lives. All the children face daunting challenges: rescuing a father, protecting a brother, holding a family together. And ultimately, pulled by the invisible thread of destiny, their suspenseful solo stories converge in an orchestral crescendo. Richly imagined and masterfully crafted, this impassioned, uplifting, and virtuosic tour de force will resound in your heart long after the last note has been struck.

An Echo In The Bone

Genre: Fiction
Author: Diana Gabaldon
Release: 2009-09-22
File Book: 832
ISBN-10: 0440338875
Language Options: un

Diana Gabaldon’s brilliant storytelling has captivated millions of readers in her bestselling and award-winning Outlander saga. In An Echo in the Bone, the seventh volume, Gabaldon continues the extraordinary story of the eighteenth-century Scotsman Jamie Fraser and his twentieth-century time-traveling wife, Claire Randall. Jamie Fraser, former Jacobite and reluctant rebel, is already certain of three things about the American rebellion: The Americans will win, fighting on the side of victory is no guarantee of survival, and he’d rather die than have to face his illegitimate son—a young lieutenant in the British army—across the barrel of a gun. Claire Randall knows that the Americans will win, too, but not what the ultimate price may be. That price won’t include Jamie’s life or his happiness, though—not if she has anything to say about it. Meanwhile, in the relative safety of the twentieth century, Jamie and Claire’s daughter, Brianna, and her husband, Roger MacKenzie, have resettled in a historic Scottish home where, across a chasm of two centuries, the unfolding drama of Brianna’s parents’ story comes to life through Claire’s letters. The fragile pages reveal Claire’s love for battle-scarred Jamie Fraser and their flight from North Carolina to the high seas, where they encounter privateers and ocean battles—as Brianna and Roger search for clues not only to Claire’s fate but to their own. Because the future of the MacKenzie family in the Highlands is mysteriously, irrevocably, and intimately entwined with life and death in war-torn colonial America. With stunning cameos of historical characters from Benedict Arnold to Benjamin Franklin, An Echo in the Bone is a soaring masterpiece of imagination, insight, character, and adventure—a novel that echoes in the mind long after the last page is turned. BONUS: This edition includes an excerpt from Diana Gabaldon's Written in My Own Heart's Blood.

For many decades, hybrid devices have been used to connect 2-wire local circuits and 4-wire long distance circuits in telephone lines. This leads to a weIl known problem, whereby echoes are generated. The delay introduced by telecommunication satellites exacerbated this problem and the need for new methods of echo control soon became obvious. The best solution to date for solving this problem was invented in the 1960s at Bell Labs by Kelly, Logan, and Sondhi, and consists of identifying the echo path generated by the hybrid by means of an adaptive filter, a technique that became known as an echo canceler. The echo canceler allowed full-duplex communication which was not possible with older echo suppression techniques. Later, with the development of hands-free teleconferencing systems, an other echo problem appeared; but this time the echo was due to the coupling between the loudspeaker and microphone. It is not surprising that the same solution was proposed to solve this problem, and most of today's telecon ferencing systems have an acoustic echo canceler. More recently, attention has been given to the very interesting problem of multichannel acoustic echo cancellation, which leads to more exciting applications that take advantage of our binaural auditory system.

The Figure Of Echo

Responsive image
Genre: Literary Criticism
Author: John Hollander
Release: 2018-07-10
File Book: 166
ISBN-10: 9780520302242
Language Options: en

In this essay on "what the imagination has made of the phenomenon of echo,” John Hollander examines aspects of the figure of echo in light of their significance for poetry. Looking at echo in its literal, acoustic sense, echo in myth, and echo as literary allusion, Hollander concludes with a study of the rhetorical status of the figure of echo and an examination of the ancient and newly interesting trope of metalepsis, or transumption, which it appears to embody. Centered on ways in which Milton's poetry echoes, and is echoed by, other texts, The Figure of Echo also explores Spenser and other Renaissance writers; romantic poets such as Keats, Shelley, and Wordsworth; and modern poets including Hardy, Eliot, Stevens, Frost, Williams, and Hart Crane. This book has implications for literary theory and holds great practical interest for students and teachers of American and English literature of all periods.
