This book discusses spaces of performance from formal opera houses to parks and graffiti around the world and is a companion toTheatre in Passing: A Moscow Photo-Diary. Drawing once again on Michel de Certeau's notion of a “second poetic geography,” this new volume examines prominent theatrical destinations —New York, London, and Paris—along with others that are often overlooked, including Canada, Mexico, and Turkey. In addition to indoor theaters, the book covers a variety of outdoor theatrical spaces, as well as street theater. Like its predecessor,Theatre in Passing 2 is richly illustrated with photographs by the author and provides fascinating insights on the intersection of performing arts, visual culture, and photography.

Passing: Two Publics in a Mexican Border City is an ethnography of the public sphere in Tijuana based on intensive fieldwork in 2006 and 2007 and numerous subsequent brief visits. Its central contribution is to develop an ethnographic method for apprehending how the border marks collective subjectivities in ways that illuminate the basic impasses of publicness in general. She examines major communicative genres such as print news, street demonstrations, internet forums, and popular ballads, as well as a variety of minor genres: family discussions, thank-you notes at religious shrines, police encounters, workplace banters, and personal interview. The question of collective subjectivity that she traces through all these examples is particularly live, politically and socially, at the border, where US legal categories forcefully shape the logics of class exclusion-and thus national membership and democratic possibility-that are general in Mexico.

Clare Kendry has severed all ties to her past. Elegant, fair-skinned and ambitious, she is married to a white man who is unaware of her African-American heritage. When she renews her acquaintance with her childhood friend Irene, who has not hidden her origins, both women are forced to reassess their marriages, the lies they have told - and to confront the secret fears they have buried within themselves. Nella Larsen's intense, taut and psychologically nuanced portrayal of lives and identities dangerously colliding established her as a leading writer of America's Harlem Renaissance. The Penguin English Library - collectable general readers' editions of the best fiction in English, from the eighteenth century to the end of the Second World War.
